No, hamsters can’t eat kidney beans as they’re toxic to them.
Kidney beans contain the toxin phytohaemagglutinin or kidney bean lectin, which is harmful to hamsters.
It can make them sick and even kill them if ingested in large quantities.
Some animals are more at risk than others; for example, young animals may get sick after eating just one or two members of the family, while adults may be able to eat several.
For this reason, it’s best to avoid feeding them to your hamster at all.
The toxin is destroyed when kidney beans are boiled for at least 10 minutes or left soaking in water overnight.
That means that food containing cooked kidney beans is safe for pets to eat.
However, the toxin is only destroyed at high temperatures; it remains intact if kidney beans are fried or roasted, so these foods should never be fed to pets.
As well as being toxic to your pet, kidney beans are also very high in fat and contain a lot of sugar.
